Easily the top of the list. I'd really prefer to use a 997 for the better looks/interior. Or a 964 for nostalgia. If this could be done with a Cayman, my god damn head would explode.

This all comes from daydreaming what car I'd daily whenever I start making the big salary ($100k+ someday)

http://bringatrailer.com/2013/10/18/a-s…

I really think this is the best answer for a do-everything car.

Make no mistake, the Corvette is always the best on-paper answer, but driving a Corvette is cliched now. The image is the problem; You're instantly an old man when driving one. If they could make a rebadged Cadillac/Pontiac version, I'd be in.

What this does is take the cool modern looks of a modern/classic Porsche and adds in the brute force and reliability of an LSx motor. The weight is even roughly the same as the stock car.

As a daily, I really think it would be sublime. C5 Vettes can get about 30 mpg and the LS motor is very reliability. It would be an absolutely ridiculous autocrosser, but it would be more fun than a normal Porsche, which is the point for me. It's got a decent interior, in 997 form, and a fair bit of trunk space.

Using a 964 would be truly crazy, but a 996/997 is much more doable and cheaper.

Kinja'd!!!

Clearly, I'm not a Porsche purist. I've driven one 911. It was quite nice, but I don't believe the motor is near as good as an LS motor.

Body wise, there's plenty of things I'd want a bit different.

Kinja'd!!!

The 997 is miles better looking in my opinion, inside and out. Something like pictured is what I'd want.

If a 964 is an option, I'd want something like such.

I'm a big fan of the Porsche Cup Wheels from the 90s. I really wish they made retro version to put on newer Porsches. I really believe these are the best looking 911s to come from Porsche. I'd prefer the wheels left aluminum, but I'm cool either way.

All of my options would have to be Black with Tan interior. I think it's just the best combo on any car.

Any Carrera that isn't a GT3 or Turbo just screams wealthy mid-life crisis to me.

Any vintage Targa screams hipster, with dad's money.

If you go Hank Moody (your last pic) you gotta go FULL Hank Moody and never wash it and never put the top up.

I believe you posted 993s for the middle pics.

Either way though, I'm going to assume you're an engineering student right now (like a lot of oppo members)? Oh how I am so envious of you all :(

Damn, and to think I considered buying an '86 Targa a few months ago.

Is it any better if I'm only a quasi-hipster and was going to pay for it myself?

That was a fun read. I'm sure that I posted the exact same OPPO article a few years back. Dreaming of a 911 in my early 20's. I progressed from an old beater Jeep Grand Cherokee to a '07 GTI to a 135iM to three different E30s. Well, I'm in my mid-twenties now and last year I bought my dream.

Kinja'd!!!

I live in Vancouver so the driving season isn't that long, but I managed to put 15,000 kms on it this summer. Some trips to California, Nevada, the BC interior, etc. Well worth it. There were some surprise maintenance items where a checkup cost me $2.550 (a scary surprise) and a set of high performance tires only cost me $900 (a pleasant surprise).

Kinja'd!!!

I, as yourself, was never the 996's biggest fan, but it has to be said that you can get SOOOO much of the 911 experience of the 997s and the 993s behind the wheel of a 996 for so much less. I've had some nice opportunities along the way. Raced and copiloted 996 Cup cars, 997 GT3 RSs and for a few days, daily driven a Carrera SC. Take it from me, the 996 is where is the sweet spot for a beginner Porsche. Grab a leggy one and don't worry about the IMS issue. Perhaps maybe you can make a case for the Cayman, but since I'm very tall, I'm more comfortable in a 911.

Cheers from Vancouver, Alexander.

Feel free to ask any questions if you have any.

And of course I'm still constantly dreaming and making lists of what's to come. If money were no object, I'd love to slowly progress down the following list (because where's the fun in getting the very best right away?)...

- AM V8 Vantage

- Any 997 GT3

- F12 BMW M6

- Aston Martin DBS Volante

- Mercedes SLS AMG Black Series

- Ferrari 458

- Lamborghini LP670-4 Super Veloce

- Pagani Zonda Cinque

Alternatively, I'll have a shed full of E30s, a 2000ish BMW X5 4.6is, and some old worthless muscle cars to work on and hoon. Whatever path I'll take, there will be fun cars.

I think I'd leave the LS in the corvette. C6's are dirt cheap, and dead nuts reliable. I personally think they look better than the 996. Then again I've always loved Corvette's and my opinion on 911's has always been "meh not bad, but not doing it for me".

I think I'd daily a C6 Corvette, and have an Elise for a track car.

Non-matching wheels, the amount of fucks given is very low, some might even say none; none-fucks-given.

It's from a TV show. I dig the wheels, even if they don't match.

The condition of the car is actually symbolism for the character.

Not quite. The XLR isn't anywhere as good of a performer as a Vette. It's more a flash piece.

Good God, did me comment not give any inclination that I was well aware of the show? Seriously, I need to not comment on the internet today. I don't have the spirit for dealing with replies that I think are dumb to my dumb comments.

Nice!

Yeah, I'm 21 now. I assumed if I did law school and had a job with good salary I could buy a car that I could put some money into, build it my way, and not be looking to flip for profit. Finally build something without compromise.

While the Corvette definitely does everything pretty well, I think Porsches seem a bit more grown up, sophisticated. I remember driving a 996 911 Cab that had a misfire issue and I passed on it at $6000, which probably was a mistake. I ended up buying a GTO instead; Figured it was an easier sell here in Kansas. And I drove a 997 GT3 RS once, but only at a top speed of about 5MPH.

I'm definitely torn cause the LS motors are so good and finding blown up 996s are getting easier. If I could build it from the bottom, and LS1 944 would be pretty sublime. V8 power, Porsche handling, Decent trunk space, Good MPG with a T56 6-speed. I'd just have to tear it all down and replace most of the bad wiring, hoses, etc. On Cup wheels, I really dig the looks too.

Kinja'd!!!

Have you done any sort of autocrosses/track days in yours? How manageable is the car doing those? I've just started doing autocrosses this summer in an S2000 I bought and it's been pretty twitchy.

SOMEONE RECOGNIZED IT. AWESOME.

Hell yes I wouldn't wash it. It's totally symbolism for Hank Moody the character, but a dirty old 911 still looks cool to me.

True, but you can't really DD a GT3; It rides too hard. A Turbo you probably could, but if I were to gut a Carrera for an LS1, I wouldn't start with a Turbo.

A normal Turbo would be cool to buy and keep that way, but they depreciate like all hell.

Roger that. Based on its lack of enthusiast following, I half suspected there was something off about this car.
